Tegral is produced by Novartis, which contains Carbamazepine. Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant and specific analgesic for trigeminal neuralgia. It is being used for the indication and treatment of Epilepsy as an anticonvulsant drug in patients with following seizures. Tegral is an Anti-Epileptic drug (AED) which controls seizures.
- Partial seizures with complex symptomatology (Psychomotor temporal lobe)
- Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal)
- Mixed seizure patterns which includes the above or other partial or generalized seizures
Contraindications: Carbamazepine should not be used in patiesnt with history of previous bone marrow depression hypersensitivity to the drug or known sensitivity to any of the tricyclic compounds. Such as amitriptyline, desipramine, imipramine, protriptyline, nortriptyline etc.

Adverse Effects: The most frequently observed adverse reactions include dizziness, drowsiness, disturbances of coordination, confusion, headache, fatigue, blurred vision.
Pregnancy: Carbamazepine should not be given in pregnancy because of its teraogenic effects.
Lactation: Carbamezepine should not be given to lactating mother as concentration of carrbamazepine in milk is approximately 60% of the maternal plasma concentration.
Children: Carbamazepine is not recommended for children under 6 years of age, instead they can use Tegral Syrup.
